PATIENCE and you won't regret it (if you won't find this beautiful then... at least interesting - if none of these are true than you should probably see a psychiatrist).
I made a program (in Delphi) to generate connected wheels on a sphere (I rendered only some of the wheels for aesthetic reasons).
No OpenGL, no nothing - just old fashion programming.

Man you never cease to amaze. This is a very cool piece! Am very interested in the evolution to a physical 3D piece. Will be quite interesting. Are you planning to machine the pieces individually or do you have access to a 3D modeling program like Solidworks or Rhino3D? Just curious.
