You know I'm always strolling in your gallery when I'm in desperate need of inspiration - Your works always get me into the mood and I never tend to upload the product of what then happens - but this time I really can't tell for sure what the metaphors mean.
Like do the horns represent constant problems growing and overwhelming the person, becoming evermore complex so that you simply have to fall to your knees of all the weight? I dunno. Please clear me up.

Do you make some few alterations digitally like cleaning the background and adding contrast?

yes, and for two reasons - first, graphite is reflective so scans always are a bit lighter or have lighter regions - second, sometimes I want to strengthen some values so I mess a bit with the levels or adjust colors
cleaning the background too - though only if it's too disturbing in the first place, I generally like the sketchy feeling of a drawing (here i cleaned it because I tried many configurations for the horns, and couldn't properly erase them. also it was drawn on two separate A4 sheets and they never scan at the exact level - and the merging of the two drawings is never perfect if you don't adjust a little)

I am aware of the sketchy feel of most of your drawings. I just assumed you are very very good at not disrupting the background. But in this work, I had to ask because the white is striking. :)

how are you able to just know how to control the blacks?  you make it look so easy...was it hard to learn?

you gradually adjust your technique... when I started I used to draw with little contrast - and that smooth shading that we all have in the beginning
but then you realize you held back in crosshatching, the shape doesn't have enough depth etc.
and then you adjust, little by little.
at one point I used only black ink (Pentel brush) and rendered the objects in black/white only - that's when you have the heaviest contrast
you can also try to see if there are tutorials on value rendering - I think that's one of the things students in fine arts learn at the very beginning (chalk and charcoal drawings)

thanks so much for responding to me.  I guess I dont really know what I'm asking exactly, haha I wasnt very descript.  I know how to use deeper shadows..it just seems so natural to you to know where to place those shadows and I want to work to achieve that skill too!
